SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS

Find out how our communities work supports the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

The University of Auckland is New Zealand’s leading university, New Zealand’s most innovative university, and in 2020 was named Entrepreneurial University of the Year, for the Asia-Pacific region. It is well-placed to contribute to New Zealand’s long-standing ambition of a prosperous knowledge-based economy. Importantly, the University of Auckland also ranks first in the world for Impact. The rankings measure how universities worldwide are performing against the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The SDGs set a 15-year agenda for all countries to end poverty, fight inequalities and build peaceful, just and sustainable societies. Placing first for Impact is an achievement that New Zealand should be proud of and has important implications in New Zealand’s ability to address Treasury’s Living Standards Framework. The New Zealand Government has identified that GDP is no longer the most meaningful measurement of achievement and has contemporised measurements, reflecting New Zealand’s need to aspire to a more sustainable economy, in a broader sense. When expertise in entrepreneurship and SDG Impact are wed, amazing things happen.

The 2020 United Nations report Exploring Youth Entrepreneurship explores aspects of youth entrepreneurship as a mechanism to address development challenges and support the achievement of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It identifies that “Jobs are seen as the cornerstone of development, and are critical in promoting prosperity, fighting poverty and encouraging peace.”

At the Business School’s Centre for Innovation and Entrepreneurship, our team frequently incorporates the UNSDGs into development of programmes for our interdisciplinary groups of students. Our community of students and alumni are drawn to developing solutions to solve the world’s problems through venture development and social entrepreneurship.
