University of Auckland Internationally Recognised for Excellence in Entrepreneurship

29 June 2023

Waipapa Taumata Rau, the University of Auckland, has been named as runner up for Entrepreneurial University of the Year (Asia Pacific) for the Triple E Awards.

The Triple E awards are administered by the Accreditation Council for Entrepreneurial and Engaged Universities and are the first awards to focus specifically on different dimensions of universities’ third mission – the economic and social mission of a university and its contribution to its communities. Implemented regionally, the Triple E Awards aim to foster change in universities and emphasize their role in their communities and ecosystem.

Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Strategic Engagement) Erik Lithander says, “The University of Auckland has made a significant investment in recent years in creating an environment where our students and staff can thrive as innovators, inventors and entrepreneurs. Innovation and Entrepreneurship are vital tools for achieving economic, social and environmental prosperity, and the University of Auckland has enormous ambitions for how we will continue to serve our communities by creating exceptional talent.”

Business School Professional Teaching Fellow Peter Rachor was also recognised as a finalist in the Entrepreneurial Educator of the Year (Asia Pacific) category, as well as receiving the most votes in an international people’s choice survey.

Dean of the Business School Professor Susan Watson says, “I’m delighted that our staff have been recognised for the calibre of their teaching. The Hynds Entrepreneurial Fellows programme, which Peter leads, has integrated innovation and entrepreneurship content across 7 faculties with significant results. And that our people working in curricular and co-curricular education through our Centre for Innovation and Entrepreneurship have the recognition they deserve for the work they do.”

The awards ceremony was held in Barcelona, with honours also presented to entrepreneurial educators in categories for Africa, Europe and the Americas. Hundreds of submissions were received. The awards were held during the Triple Helix Conference, whose theme for the year was Entrepreneurial and Engaged Universities for Sustainable Development: linking education, research and innovation to the United Nation’s Sustainability Goals (UN-SDG).

Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) Professor Frank Bloomfield says, “It’s great to have had this recognition from the Accreditation Council of Entrepreneurial and Engaged Universities. The University of Auckland has a legacy for creating impact through research, and as we increase our focus on generating tangible solutions for health, clean energy and other contemporary problems, we will continue to grow the scope and scale of our innovation.”

Director of the University of Auckland Business School’s Centre for Innovation and Entrepreneurship (CIE) Darsel Keane presented at the conference and received the award on behalf of the University of Auckland. She says, “It’s been wonderful to learn from others working in this field and to discuss potential collaborations to build our regional entrepreneurial ecosystem. Our congratulations go to Queensland University of Technology (QUT), who won the Asia-Pacific category, and to all the other winners and finalists.”
