University of Auckland alumni start-up Kami named one of the world’s top 100 companies

12 April 2022

EdTech company Kami has been named by TIME as one of the world’s top 100 most influential companies of 2022. They are listed in the ‘leaders’ category alongside companies such as Spotify, Sony, Impossible Foods and Airbnb.

Kami’s software was first invented in 2012 by three University of Auckland students as a way to collaborate on their study notes. They developed their idea through the Velocity $100k Challenge business planning competition, administered by the Business School’s Centre for Innovation and Entrepreneurship (CIE). Following success in the competition, the team behind Kami evolved their product to create a cloud-based platform that allows educators and students to annotate, view, edit, and collaborate on digital documents from anywhere, transforming the way educators engage and interact with their students.

TIME states that “During the pandemic, education-technology firm Kami—which lets teachers share learning resources, conduct virtual classes, provide feedback, and more—offered its products for free to its 32 million teachers and students in 180 countries, despite having no other revenue source. That move has paid off as districts made decisions later on about how to spend their money; Deloitte named Kami New Zealand’s fastest-growing business last year following a nearly 1,200% revenue increase.”

CIE Director Darsel Keane says “We are thrilled to see our alumni honoured in this list. Kami’s technical brilliance is matched by their exceptional customer service and authenticity in community building. The solution they have created for educators is having a global impact, all the while their head office is located in New Zealand, creating jobs that benefit our local community.”
