CIE Academic Director to lead new Innovation and Professional Development portfolio

21 July 2021

The Centre for Innovation and Entrepreneurship’s academic director, Professor Rod McNaughton, has been appointed as the inaugural Director of Innovation and Professional Development within the University of Auckland Business School (UABS).

The role provides strategic leadership to a portfolio that brings together the Centre for Innovation and Entrepreneurship (CIE) and Executive and Professional Development. Both units previously reported within the Graduate School of Management.

The new structure and reporting line emphasises the importance of both entrepreneurship and professional programmes to the Business School, and the University’s new strategic plan Taumata Teitei, which envisions the University of Auckland as a “global powerhouse of innovation, creativity, and entrepreneurship”.

“In my new role I will be able to champion entrepreneurship and professional development not only within the Business School, but across the university, and externally in our entrepreneurial and corporate ecosystems”, says McNaughton.

“We have many successes to build on as we look to move these activities to the next level, and respond to the growing recognition of their importance to the success of our graduates and ultimately, Aotearoa’s future. I am particularly excited to explore the synergies between the two units to help us not only encourage and support new entrepreneurs, but develop entrepreneurially minded managers and more innovative companies.”

Announcement of the new portfolio follows the recent appointment of Darsel Keane as Director, Centre for Innovation and Entrepreneurship and Rachel Wright as Director, Executive and Professional Development, who will work closely with Professor McNaughton.
