About the course

You will be introduced to the key steps in the research commercialisation process. You will learn how research relates to innovation activities and processes, how opportunities for capturing value from research are identified and selected, intellectual property-related issues and other key concepts and practices for research commercialisation.

You will learn how research relates to innovation activities and processes, how opportunities for capturing value from research are identified and selected, intellectual property-related issues and other key concepts and practices for research commercialisation.

Course content

We cover how the interaction between science and society impacts academic life and practices, including:

  • The role of science in the New Zealand economy
  • Identifying ideas and opportunities for creating value from your PhD
  • National science policy and why it matters to PhD students
  • Core steps in the commercialisation process
  • Funding, grants and support in commercialising your research
  • Industry perspectives on the value of the PhD
  • PhD career paths and possibilities

Participants will also have an opportunity to participate in a LEGO® Serious Play® workshop. This internationally accredited methodology is designed to enhance innovation and business performance. It is based on research which shows that this kind of hands-on, minds-on learning produces a deeper, more meaningful understanding of the world and its possibilities.

Am I eligible?

University of Auckland PhD students from all academic disciplines are encouraged to apply for the PhD Research Innovation and Commercialisation Course. The course is held at the University of Auckland Business School. Course materials and meals are free to all participants accepted into the programme.
