Alumni profile: Alex Kendall

Co-Founder | Wayve

Alex co-founded Wayve, a new UK-based self-driving car start-up that is building end-to-end machine learning algorithms to make self-driving cars a reality.

While most autonomous vehicle companies are approaching the problem with traditional rules-based robotics, Wayve believe that building data-driven machine learning where it learns from experience is the better alternative.

For Alex, applying an innovative and entrepreneurial mindset in his career was not something that came naturally to him and required a lot of practice. Nevertheless, he found that this was integral to his accomplishments as it forced him to push past failure and try again.

His studies at the University of Auckland gave him a broad knowledge base to start with, which proved instrumental to his later successes in more specialised fields.

“I got the chance to learn and explore a huge range of technologies during my studies. I studied mechatronics engineering, which covers everything from machines and mechanisms to electronics and software. Since then I’ve dived into a much more niche research field, but that breadth of experience has been invaluable to lead a cutting edge team.”

Most importantly Alex believes that if you are considering an innovative and entrepreneurial pathway you need to “surround yourself with the best people” and “build something you are passionate about.”

Alex Kendall graduated with a Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) in Mechatronics Engineering.
